Adjustments of the legislation concerning the kilometre levy for freight transport in 2018

Legislation concerning the kilometre levy

Trucks with a MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) of more than 3.5 tonnes have been subject to a kilometre levy in Belgium since 2016. This was decided by the Commission of Mobility.

Since 2018, truck owners have been given the choice of four service providers from who they can order an OBU (On-Board Unit) to register the kilometres driven on the Belgian toll roads. Traxgo can help you check the kilometres provided by the officially recognised systems.

Four changes to the kilometre levy in 2018.
Since January 2018, there have been 4 changes made to the kilometre levy.

  1. More toll roads
  2. Updated tariffs
  3. Variable penalty rate
  4. Additional vehicle categories

1. More toll roads

The Flemish government has decided to add 157 km of toll roads. Wallonia has added 4 km. A toll has been applied to all roads in Brussels.

2. Updated tariffs

In Flanders and Brussels, a distinction has been made between Euro V and Euro VI vehicles. The tariff for a Euro V vehicle has been increased by 1 euro-cent.

3. Variable penalty rate

The penalty rates are classified into 4 different categories. These start at €100 and can go up to €1,000. The correct penalty rates can be viewed on the Viapass website.

4. Additional vehicle categories

A further category falls under the kilometre levy. BE trailers from category N1 (equal to or less than 3.5 tonnes) with bodywork code BC that tow a semi-trailer, and of which the combined weight is greater than 3.5 tonnes. This category must pay the same kilometre levy as trucks. The rate per kilometre depends on the weight class, emission standards and the type of road used.
